DOT Tip of the Quarter: Motor Vehicle Records and DOT Medical Cards

Posted on 02/16/16

Maintenance of the driver qualification file, where required, includes an annual statement of violations from the commercial motor vehicle (CMV) driver, and an annual check of the motor vehicle record (MVR) to confirm that report as noted in our last newsletter.  DOT medical cards and their renewal are another area where the MVR is required.

Currently, it is required that, within 15 days after the medical card is renewed, a check of the MVR is required to certify that the new medical card has been duly received and recorded by the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in the particular State it was issued.  It is also required to certify that the medical examination (DOT Physical) was performed by an examiner registered in the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.

Safe-T-Works can assist you in tracking the dates of these certifications and help you avoid extra MVR checks by combining the medical certification and the annual review when it is permissible.
